Costa del Sol / Costa del Golf
Cabopino: This 18 hole course is short but very tight in places. The modern design of Juan Ligues Creus features lakes that affect at least four holes. It offers three par 3's, two par 5's and thirteen par 4's in its layout. The signature hole has to be the third where the tee drops dramatically from the side of a cliff to the fairway situated some 200 metres below!
Alhaurin: The full length course is up and down and fairways are long and narrow so straight hitting is a must in order to avoid bunkers, lakes and the colourful array of flowers which make the rough look almost inviting. Playing here, however, is less intimidating than it appears and with up to six teeing areas at each hole Alhaurín is adaptable to various standards of golfer.
Santa Maria: An 18 hole championship course situated at the edge of a luscious forest of pine trees and cork oaks. The first 9 holes opened in 1991 and were designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido. The second 9, inaugurated in 1996 were designed by Santa Maria's very own technical team, tracing the contours of two valleys in which the natural vegetation, streams and four lakes form natural hazards.
Los Naranjos: Situated right in the heart of Europe’s golf el dorado on Costa del Sol. A challenge not only for the average player but even for the very best professionals! The famous finishing hole is a long par 5, with the clubhouse behind the green, but before reaching the green there are several problems to handle, including the lakes to be crossed before you can finally hole out!
Lauro 27: Set on a hillside of the Mijas mountain range in a place of extraordinary beauty and excellent climate. Part of the golf course is in a protected construction free area, where nature is continuous. This course is recognised as one of the best on the coast. Its designer Falco Nardi, elaborated a mainly flat 18 hole course, where technique and strategy make it a challenge to players of all handicap.
Miraflores Golf: Like that of most of the courses in the area, views are quite spectacular of both the sea and the mountains. Designed by Falco Nardi, the course was opened to the public in 1990. It is very pleasant and full of interesting challenges for all golfers, whatever their handicap may be. There are various water hazards so concentration is very important as any mistake, however small, could lead to the loss of the ball.
Guadalhorce Golf Club: with its impressive Andalusian mansion built at the end of the 18th century, this is a green oasis in the midst of the busy capital. A parkland course, with wide fairways lined with tough rough and some banks. The front nine flat and wide layout contrasting greatly from the back nine, which is found to have more hazards including lakes and tropical vegetation, and raised greens with sloping banks.
Parador Golf: In the heart of the Costa del Sol on the sea shore, just 10 minutes from Malaga International Airport. Over the years, this course - the oldest in Andalusia - has been transformed into one that is both demanding for veterans and accessible for novices. The course dates back to the early 1920's, and are tied to the Royal Family in Britain, Queen Victoria promoted construction of the Club.
La Cala: The natural features of the terrain have been used to challenging effect by the renowned golf course architect, Cabell B. Robinson. The three 18 hole courses (America, Asia and Europa) are carefully maintained to ensure they are playable all year round. The layout allows for plenty of water hazards. All three offer different challenges to all levels of golfers and demand good course management in addition to a wide variety of shots.
Marbella: the 18 hole layout was designed to provide a testing but enjoyable game for golfers of different abilities. Bunkers abound and the rough can be difficult for shots that stray. Several lakes, which enhance the scenic value of the course particularly on the back nine, have to be successfully negotiated to preserve a reasonable score-card. Every hole is unique in design and character.
Los Arqueros: Set in the mountains on the road to Ronda the layout is breathtaking in more way than one. The opening was eagerly awaited and has not been a disappointment. Now with new owners in charge the club is benefiting from a programme of improvements and rejuvenation. Located five kilometres from San Pedro de Alcántara it is well worth a drive into the mountains.
Estepona Golf: The design uses the natural landscape which is set against the Sierra Bermeja mountain range. The fairways are wide and the greens large which provides a challenge for players of all levels, but doesn't penalise the average golfer. There are many palms, eucalyptus and wild olive trees on the course, and players have a great opportunity to enjoy many rare species of wildlife, particularly on the second half.
Mijas Golf: Mijas Golf has become one of the most popular golf complexes in Europe, known by the outstanding condition of the courses. Los Lagos is a ground course with wide fairways and a few forest trees obstacles, but is defended by many bunkers and nine lakes. Olivos lies in a smaller peace of land, and has different characteristics to the other. The greens are smaller with undulations and well protected by bunkers.
El Paraiso: Designed by Gary Player, the course was opened in 1973 and is one of the oldest established courses on the coast. For more than twenty years it has been a mecca of golf, whether you are a low handicap or just wanting to enjoy a round of golf on your holiday, the course offers golfers of all ages and abilities an exciting challenge. The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams.
La Cañada: Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol, nestled between the sea and mountains and surrounded by marvellous countryside. The first municipal golf course in Andalusia. Challenging fairways, fast greens, large groves of indigenous trees and spectacular views of the Mediterranean make up an ideal course for those who want to bask in the sun and enjoy being surrounded by nature.
La Duquesa: Golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones is located in the midst of a spectacular landscape, with magnificent views over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and to Africa. The course consists of five par 3's, eight par 4's, and five par 5's, with two small man-made lakes. It offers an interesting and varied game due to its long fairways and has two clearly different parts.
Santana Golf: Sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design.
Calanova Manuel Pinero Golf made the most of the surroundings when designing Calanova's 18 holes and has come up with a course that medium handicap players will find is a pleasure, yet challenging to play. Strategically placed bunkers and lakes populate the course, and its hard to believe this green and tranquil sanctuary is only minutes from the coastal village of La Cala.
Atalaya Golf. The Old Course has been one of the most distinctive golf courses of the Costa del Sol. A classical parkland course formed by a series of superb fairways of bermuda-grass, strategically-placed bunkers and elevated greens. The Atalaya New Course is a tight and hilly course designed by Paul Krings in March ‘93. An 18-hole course with undulating fairways and perfect greens and constitutes a true challenge for those who have already starting playing the game with a dramatic mountainous backdrop.
El Chaparral Golf Course: As soon as Spanish architect Pepe Gancedo was commissioned the local golfing fraternity waited to see if he could surpass his other design triumphs at Torrequebrada and Golf del Sur… they were not disappointed. The course and Clubhouse are unique, practically every hole overlook the sea, and the nature of the terrain, the indigenous vegetation and pine forests ensure that no two holes are alike.
La Quinta: The urban planning of La Quinta is implemented around the three courses each permitting different combinations for playing 18 holes. It satisfies both the golf enthusiast as well as the professional. It involves a course that is very straightforward and entertaining, which adapts to all levels of play. Its difficulty lies in from the sloping fairways and deep bunkers.
Costa Blanca
Las Ramblas: Located in a hilly area in the depths of a valley, this is a medium size length course, , complicated with natural obstacles and the characteristic river bed terrain and water hazards making this a challenging course requiring a high level of skills. Fairways are comfortable except for the tree lined rough and sloping terrain. There are only 12 bunkers as the course makes more of the natural obstacles.
La Marquesa: Fairways are non sloping and fairly easy but the green probably present the most challenge with prominent sleeps and undulations although they are quite large and clearly visible. The course has numerous bunkers and 4 water hazards, three of which can play a decisive role in each round. Overall the course is not excessively demanding although here are some tough holes to contend with.
Alicante Fairways: are smooth and relatively flat, and with good visibility though with an abundance of water hazards and there are numerous bunkers. Seve´s signature “S” lake surrounding the green at the 9th hole and some roman ruins unearthed next to the green offers a difference to the course. Greens are fast and undulating though exposed to sea breezes.
Costa de la Luz
The Costa Esuri: course borders the Guadiana river and enjoys spectacular views of Portugal, the river, and the beach in the distance. Currently 18 holes, this course will be extended to 36 holes. It will be more than 6250m and takes advantage of the same sea views as the west course, as well as having a view of the town of Ayamonte.
The Isla Canela: 18 hole course was designed by Juan Catarineu in 1993 and is skilfully set in the nature reserve at Isla Canela. The course is a challenging course with small slopes formed by the natural dunes. Each of the holes combines strength dexterity along with precision, all in their own proportions. 10 of the holes feature water hazards and along with orange, olive and eucalyptus trees situated strategically makes it a worthy test for all levels of handicap!
